Dan"Rodan"Ross was born and raised in Memphis,Tn. He was educated at Tennessee State University and Memphis College of Art. During his time at MCA he used many different mediums but consentrated on using drawing pencils. Over the years he has perfected the use of graphite and clay on cold press board, striving to make his work appear photo realistic. He has now switched from using graphite to acrylic paint. Influenced by another local artist and in efforts to stretch himself, he has found a new love and appreciation of painting. He calls his style of painting "loose realism". A mixture of chaos, detail and control where many times he does not know what direction the painting is going in. But generally it works out.
His work is influenced by the struggle of black Americans prior to and during the Civil Rights Movement, a time when his parents grew up in deep southern Mississippi. Sharing their experiences of racism with him at an early age, he relives those times in his work. He wants to tell the story of a generation that he considers who was the strongest and bravest of all generations. You will also see a softer and creative side of "Rodan" in his paintings of popular pop culture icons. His number one goal in his work and life is to stretch and evolve. Looking for new ways to acheive that perfect piece.
